Part of my 11-day course “Mindfulness Made Easy”

Objective:

The objective of this exercise is to experience mindfulness by incorporating it into everyday tasks, such as cleaning, making tea, or hanging out laundry. By focusing on the present moment and engaging all senses, you will learn to cultivate a sense of calm and awareness amidst your daily activities.

Instructions:

  1. Choose a task: Select a simple household task that you would normally do without much thought, such as washing dishes, tidying, making a cup of tea, or folding laundry. This task will serve as your focus for practising mindfulness.
  2. Set the scene: Create a quiet and comfortable environment where you can perform the chosen task without too many distractions. Take a moment to settle into the environment and prepare yourself mentally for the exercise. Try to enjoy the process.
  3. Mindful preparation: Before starting the task, take a few deep breaths to centre yourself. Clear your mind of any distractions or thoughts about past or future activities. Focus solely on the present moment and the upcoming task.
  4. Engage your senses: As you begin the task, pay close attention to your senses. Notice the sights, sounds, smells, textures, and even tastes associated with the activity. For example, if you’re making tea, observe the colour of the tea leaves, the sound of the boiling water, the aroma of the brewed tea, the warmth of the teapot, and the taste of the tea as you sip it.
  5. Stay present: Throughout the task, resist the urge to let your mind wander or get lost in thoughts about other things. Instead, continuously bring your focus back to the sensations and actions involved in the task at hand. If you find your mind drifting, gently redirect your attention to the present moment.
  6. Observe without judgment: As you engage in the task, practice non-judgmental awareness. Simply observe your thoughts, feelings, and sensations as they arise, without labelling them as good or bad. Accept whatever experiences come up during the practice without trying to change or analyse them.
  7. Repeat regularly: Incorporate mindfulness into other everyday tasks throughout your day, at home or at work. Experiment with different activities and notice how your experience of mindfulness evolves over time with practice. Set aside a few minutes each day to engage in mindful activities and observe the impact on your mental state.

Conclusion:

Practising mindfulness during everyday tasks offers a simple yet powerful way to cultivate presence, calmness, and awareness in your daily life. By incorporating mindfulness into routine activities, you can learn to appreciate the beauty of the present moment and find greater peace amidst the busyness of modern life.
