Part of my 11-day course “Mindfulness Made Easy”

Objective:

This exercise uses what we have learned in this chapter to help cultivate non-judgmental awareness, teach emotional management techniques, and promote acceptance of one’s feelings and experiences.

If you find yourself struggling with emotional issues, or high levels of anxiety or stress, this exercise may help you to identify the key emotional triggers and domino-effects that are causing the problem.

Materials Needed:

Pen and paper, or a digital note-taking device.

Duration:

Approximately 20-30 minutes.

Instructions:

  1. Preparation:
    • Find a quiet and comfortable space where you won’t be disturbed.
    • Take a few deep breaths to centre yourself and bring your focus to the present moment.
  2. Reflection on emotions: Write down the following questions and take a few moments to reflect on each one:
    • How would you describe your current mood?
    • What specific emotions are you experiencing right now?
    • Are there any underlying feelings that you’ve been ignoring or suppressing?
    • Reflect on your general disposition over the past week. Have there been any patterns or recurring emotions?
  3. Identification of emotional triggers:
    • Think about recent situations or events that triggered strong emotions in you.
    • Write down these triggers and the emotions they elicited. Try to be as specific as possible.
  4. Transforming emotional triggers into positive changes: Once you have identified your emotional triggers through mindful awareness, you can begin to use this information as a catalyst for positive change in your life. Understanding what situations, thoughts, or interactions provoke strong emotional responses allows you to implement strategies to manage those emotions more effectively. Here are a few steps you can take:
    • Reflection and analysis: Take some time to reflect on the emotional triggers you have identified. Consider the circumstances surrounding these triggers, including the people involved, the environment, and your internal state at the time. Use the insights gained from this reflection to analyse patterns and commonalities among your triggers.
    • Creating a trigger log: Keep a journal or log where you record instances of emotional triggers as they occur. Note down the specific trigger, the emotions it evoked, and any associated thoughts or physical sensations. Over time, this log can help you gain a deeper understanding of your triggers and track your progress in managing them.
    • Exploring underlying beliefs and assumptions: Dive deeper into the beliefs and assumptions that underlie your emotional responses to certain triggers. Ask yourself why these triggers provoke such strong reactions and whether these reactions align with your values and goals. Challenging and re-framing negative beliefs can help shift your perspective and reduce the intensity of your emotional responses.
    • Developing coping strategies: Armed with knowledge about your emotional triggers, brainstorm and experiment with coping strategies to manage them more effectively. These strategies could include mindfulness techniques such as mindful breathing or body scans, cognitive restructuring to challenge negative thoughts, or assertive communication skills to address triggering situations directly.
    • Practice and implementation: Consistently practice your chosen coping strategies in real-life situations where you encounter your triggers. Start with smaller, less intense triggers and gradually work your way up to more challenging ones. With practice, you’ll become more adept at recognizing triggers early and implementing effective coping mechanisms in the moment.
    • Seeking support: Don’t hesitate to seek support from trusted friends, family members, or mental health professionals as you work to manage your emotional triggers. Share your insights and goals with them, and enlist their encouragement and accountability along the way. Sometimes, an outside perspective can offer valuable insights and support.
    • Celebrating progress: Celebrate your progress and successes along the way, no matter how small they may seem. Acknowledge the efforts you’re putting into managing your emotional triggers and recognize the positive changes you’re making in your life. Celebrating milestones can boost your motivation and reinforce your commitment to personal growth.

By following these steps and integrating them into your daily life, you can transform your awareness of emotional triggers into opportunities for positive change and personal development. Remember that change takes time and patience, so be kind to yourself as you navigate this journey of self-discovery and growth
